Understanding Domestic Abuse Counselling

At Indy Support Services, I understand that domestic abuse can touch every part of your life—emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. The pain and confusion that follow can feel overwhelming, and it’s completely normal to experience a mix of emotions such as shame, guilt, or uncertainty. You do not have to go through this alone. Reaching out for support is a brave and powerful first step toward healing, and I am here to walk with you every step of the way.

Domestic abuse counselling at Indy Support Services is designed to offer you a confidential, supportive, and non-judgmental space. Everyone’s story is unique, and as your dedicated counsellor, I am here to listen, understand, and help you find your voice. Through our work together, you’ll have the chance to process your experiences, rebuild your self-confidence, and regain control over your life. I believe in empowering you to heal at your own pace, in your own time.

What is Domestic Abuse Counselling?

Domestic abuse counselling is a therapeutic process tailored to support individuals who have experienced or are experiencing abuse within their intimate relationships or family units. The goal is to create a safe space where you can explore your feelings, make sense of your experiences, and begin to heal from trauma. Sessions are guided by your needs—whether that means unpacking past hurts, learning to set healthy boundaries, or simply having a place to be heard and believed.

At Indy Support Services, the counselling process adapts to your unique situation, offering guidance, tools, and encouragement as you work through difficult emotions and choices. You are encouraged to identify your own strengths and resources, while gaining practical skills to navigate the challenges of recovery. Confidentiality and your sense of agency are always respected. Collaboration is at the heart of our work together, ensuring you remain in control of your healing journey.

Key aspects of domestic abuse counselling with Indy Support Services include:

  • Safety Planning: I will work with you to develop practical strategies that support your immediate and ongoing safety, whether you are currently in or have left a difficult situation.
  • Validation and Empowerment: I am here to help you understand that what happened was not your fault, nurture your self-worth, and guide you as you reclaim your sense of agency.
  • Education: I can offer information about the cycle of abuse, warning signs, and what healthy, respectful relationships can look like.
  • Emotional Support: My goal is to provide a warm, welcoming space where you can express feelings without fear or judgment—anger, sadness, confusion, hope, and everything in between.
  • Resource Connection: If you need additional support, I can connect you with helpful community resources, including legal, housing, or medical support.

Types Of Abuse

  • Physical abuse - Force or violence against a person, such as hitting, slapping, kicking, choking, pushing, or causing bodily injury—also includes threats with weapons or assaults on others.
  • Sexual abuse - Any non‑consensual sexual act, coercive or degrading sexual behaviour, marital rape, manipulating pregnancy/contraception, or sharing intimate images without consent.
  • Psychological / emotional abuse - Includes insults, threats to harm (self or others), gaslighting (denying reality), belittling, blaming, fear‑inducing tactics, emotional blackmail, public humiliation and eroding self-esteem.
  • Financial / economic abuse - Controlling or denying access to money, monitoring spending, preventing work or education, withholding living costs, or financially trapping someone to make them dependent.
  • Social or geographical isolation - Stopping contact with family/friends, forbidding social activities, relocating them to unfamiliar areas, or limiting mobility.
  • Stalking or technology‑facilitated abuse - Surveillance, GPS tracking, monitoring calls or online activity, sending harassing texts/emails, or controlling someone via spyware or shared accounts.
  • Coercive control - An ongoing pattern of manipulation, restriction and intimidation—often invisible in single incidents. It includes controlling decisions about appearance, contact, routines and autonomy. National Principles officially recognise it as central to domestic abuse in Australia.
  • Verbal abuse (closely linked to emotional abuse) - Name-calling, yelling, constant criticism of identity or parenting skills—used to dominate through words.
  • Spiritual / cultural abuse - Undermining, mocking or forbidding religious or cultural practices, belittling one’s beliefs or refusing access to traditional land or ceremonies.
  • Child, elder, or carer abuse - Abuse of dependents—including neglect, physical/sexual/emotional harm, or controlling behaviours toward children, the elderly, or those in care.
