Family and domestic violence in Australia is on the rise, and unfortunately, Victoria is no exception, with women and children being the most affected. Whether you've witnessed or experienced it firsthand, the effects can be profound and long-lasting, impacting emotional well-being, mental health, and overall life outcomes.
That's where family domestic violence counselling services play a crucial role. With compassionate care and tailored support, I help individuals process their experiences, regain confidence, and build a healthy path toward healing. Whether you or a loved one are seeking emotional support, practical strategies, or a safe space to share your story, I am here to help you navigate this difficult journey.
A 2021 ABS survey found that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 14 men in Australia have experienced violence from an intimate partner. It also revealed that 1 in 8 people aged 18 and over had witnessed violence against a parent before turning 15. These statistics are alarming, but support is available for those who have experienced or are currently living in a dangerous or abusive environment. Whether that be family and domestic violence counselling services, crisis accommodation, or legal and financial assistance, there are services ready to provide help, guidance, and protection to those in need.
You don't have to be experiencing physical abuse to be in a domestic violence situation. Domestic and family violence can take many forms, often involving patterns of power, control, and coercion that impact a person’s safety, freedom, and well-being. It can be subtle or overt, but all forms of abuse are harmful and unacceptable. Common forms of domestic and family violence include:
Family and domestic violence counselling services are a form of therapy designed to support individuals who have experienced family or domestic violence or are currently living in a dangerous, abusive, or violent environment. These services play an important role in helping individuals navigate the complex emotional and psychological challenges that arise from such distressing situations. The primary objective of these counselling services is to offer a safe and confidential space where individuals can express their feelings and experiences without fear of judgment or further harm.
At Indy Support Services, I provide domestic violence counselling for children, including those who are now adults but have experienced or witnessed family violence in the past. I also provide women's domestic violence counselling for those who are currently experiencing or have previously experienced violence or abuse by an intimate partner.
My goal is to create a safe and supportive space where healing can begin, to help individuals rebuild their sense of self-worth and find strength in their journey toward healing. I'm here to listen, support, and provide the emotional support needed to help individuals navigate and heal from their past traumatic experiences so they can move forward with hope and confidence.
Although it's a huge step, choosing to attend counselling to overcome your experiences with domestic or family violence is not something to be afraid of, although I understand if you are. However, it is my role to help you feel safe, supported, and empowered throughout the entire process. This is a space where you can share your experiences without judgment and begin the journey toward healing.
During our sessions, we’ll discuss your past experiences and how they’ve affected you, gently exploring how they've impacted your emotional well-being, self-esteem, and overall outlook on life. It's all about identifying and processing your trauma and developing coping strategies that help you move forward.
Of course, working through something like this can't be done in one session alone. Instead, we'll work through your experiences and challenges at your pace over multiple sessions, offering ongoing support as you gradually rebuild your strength, sense of self, and emotional resilience.
If you are in immediate danger, please call 000. Otherwise, the Victorian Government has various resources you can access if you need support with family or domestic violence, housing, or other related concerns. Remember, help is never far away.
